In getting our house ready to put on the market, my wife and I were recently wondering why it is that smoke detectors always turn yellow after a few years.

As always, Google came to the rescue with an answer, albeit not having anything to do with smoke detectors. So, if you are wondering why smoke detectors, Super Nintendo Entertainment Systems, or other plastic items turn yellow, here is your answer.

Monty Python in Japan

I received a Monty Python daily tear-off calendar for Christmas, which is quite amusing. Fun fact from a few days ago:

In February of 1976, Monty Python’s Flying Circus became the highest-rated TV show in Japan. They re-titled it The Gay Boys Dragon Hour, and followed it with an on-air discussion of the program.

As I’ve mentioned before, Japanese TV: C’est Magnifique!

My wife and I were having a discussion this morning about the difference between Yams and Sweet Potatoes. The bottom line: usually anything you get in the U.S. is a sweet potato, even if they call it a Yam. Check this out if you want a real scientific breakdown.

I saw this on the Fox Report tonight, then found these sites. The Simpsons is soon to debut in Arab countries via satellite network MBC. There will be a few changes, however:

Homer will be called Omar
He won’t drink beer
He won’t eat bacon or hot dogs
He won’t go to Moe’s bar
The show will be called Al-Shamshoons

I’m all for as many people as possible around the world to derive as much enjoyment from the Simpsons as we have here in America for so long. I’m just not so sure how well some of the themes will translate. Hopefully they can pull it off.

Google Announces Plan To Destroy All Information It Can’t Index

News from The Onion (always reliable) about “Google Purge.” Pretty funny – they even have a picture of former Novell CEO Eric Schmidt.

In similar news, I keep hearing these ads for Microsoft Student 2006 on the radio. The ad features the voices of a bunch of kids asking their parents for help with homework. The voice-over implies that kids can now get all their answers from MS Student and become much more intelligent, instead of bugging their parents.

I’m wondering how long it’ll be before they cut out the middle-man altogether, and announce Microsoft Parent 2007…

Two kiddie pizzas

I’m in lovely Provo, Utah on business, staying at the Provo Marriott. Since I was really busy with work tonight, I ordered room service: one medium pizza (the smallest size on the regular menu) and three beers – I was thirsty.

The room service lady called me back a few minutes later to tell me they were “out” of medium pizzas! She offered to send me two “small” pizzas instead. I replied that I didn’t know there were small pizzas, as I didn’t see them on the menu.

It turns out the “small” pizzas are the kiddie pizzas from the children’s menu.

I ate them both.

Finally, because this is Utah, they decided for me that I didn’t need three beers, and only sent me two.
